Wrestling Wins Third Consecutive League Championship

With only one week left in the regular season, the Raider Wrestling team took down two more CAAC teams to earn the 2023 CAAC White League Championship. This makes it their 3rd league championship in a row and the 9th in program history.

On Wednesday the Raiders traveled to Eaton Rapids to take on the hosting Greyhounds and the Vikings of Haslett. With a few starters out of their lineup and younger wrestlers filling in, the Raiders managed to edge the Greyhounds (38-37) and easily handled the Vikings (73-0).

Leading the Raiders to victory against the Greyhounds were senior Ethan Webert recording a technical fall (winning by 15 or more points), Drew Miller, Brad Meyers, and Gunnar Williams recording pins and Junior Mark Meyers battling to win his match 1-0.

It was a one-sided dual against Haslett, the Raiders were determined to not only win every match, but wanted to make a statement, which they did. The Raiders recorded 9 pins, 8 of which were in the first period. The quickest pin went to sophomore Isaac Kramer recording his pin in just :34 seconds!

On Saturday, the Raiders traveled to Shepherd for a 23-team invitational. With just 12 of their 14 wrestlers, they tallied up 150 points, earning 3rd place. Eight Raiders placed top 6 in their weight classes: Andrew Feldpausch (6th at 106 lbs), Jake Olson (5th at 113 lbs), Drew Miller (Champion at 132 lbs), Isaac Kramer (6th at 138 lbs), John Dodson (6th at 157 lbs), Deakin Guidi (3rd at 165 lbs), Branson Goodman (2nd at 190lbs) and Mark Meyers (4th at 215 lbs).

Drew Miller not only won his weight class, but was voted by the coaches as the Outstanding Wrestler of the lower weight classes. Congratulations Drew!!

“What a week of wrestling we had.” Coach Andy Pulling stated, “We struggled to wrestle our positions against Eaton Rapids but got the job done and earned our 3rd league title in as many years.” We turned around, fixed some things and shut out Haslett. It’s important for our team to wrestle to our capability regardless who is in or out of our lineup.

We had a chance to regroup and refocus at practice then stormed into the weekend wrestling tough competition. This is a tough team led by a tough group of seniors. It’s also great to see individuals grow, such as Drew Miller finding his groove mentally and physically and this being recognized by other coaches with his Outstanding Wrestler Award.”

Catch the Raider Wrestlers in action Wednesday at Grand Ledge High School and Saturday at the Don Johnson Fieldhouse in Lansing for the CAAC Individual League Tournament.
